Exposure to ProtoKinetix’ AAGP™ Maintains Cell Integrity and Cell Function
PROTOKINETIX INC. (PKTX: OTCBB)
Vancouver, British Columbia, February 15, 2006
ProtoKinetix, Inc. (PKTX), announces today the results of experiments conducted to study the effects of AAGP™ on cellular growth and function. Previous results demonstrated AAGP™ protective activity against harsh stress (such as H2O2 exposure and UV-C radiation) even at low concentrations.
ProteoCell Laboratories have just completed a group of trials to test for possible adverse effects of extended exposure to AAGP™. The first series of tests were designed to examine whether AAGP™ causes any increase in cell growth or change in cell integrity. The skin cells were treated with AAGP™ for 24-hours, washed, and then incubated for up to 5-days. The results show that AAGP™ does not affect cell growth and the cells seem to be morphologically normal, Dr. Samer Hussein, of ProteoCell, states “these results suggest that AAGP™ does not affect cellular integrity or cause any abnormal effects”.
The second group of experiments were set to test for cell functionality and responsiveness. Using one control cell line and another engineered to secrete a recombinant protein, both cell lines were grown with and without AAGP™. The growth media (conditioned media) was collected from all samples after 4-days (total of 4-samples). The media was tested on the control cell lines to check for protein activity using a higher concentration of 15mg/ml. Dr Hussein reports “the results clearly showed that AAGP™ does not affect cell protein secretion and does not change cellular protein activity or mode of action”. He further states that “these observations indicate that the cells remain functional and fully responsive in the presence of AAGP™”.
These experiments demonstrate that extended exposure of AAGP™ to the cells does not affect their cellular growth and the cells remain morphologically normal. Combining this with our previous results suggests that AAGP™ increases cell viability by preventing the cells from dying rather than promote cell growth.
